Join a remote regional Council as their Finance Manager and lead the transformation of their Finance Department. Based in Cairns, you’ll travel to the community in Cape York for one week a month (expenses paid).

You will focus on building structure, systems, and accountability across finance operations to ensure long-term transparency, efficiency, and sustainability.

Reporting directly to the CEO, you’ll oversee a small team of 3, located across Cairns and the community. You’ll work closely with senior leadership, auditors, and external partners to strengthen financial management and governance practices.

Working for a small Aboriginal Council, you’ll need to be flexible and resilient. This role is for someone who doesn’t mind jumping in and helping out when needed. You need to be aware of cultural protocols and work with people of different backgrounds and abilities.

What’s On Offer

  • $100K–$120K + super (negotiable for the right candidate)
  • Full-time permanent position, 36¼-hour week (8 hrs Mon–Thu, half-day Fri)
  • Cairns-based, with one week per month travel to the community in Cape York (expenses paid)
  • Work vehicle provided for business and commute use in Cairns
  • 5 weeks annual leave with 17.5% leave loading
  • Accommodation, car, and meal allowances provided while travellin
  • Based in a newly renovated office building with free on-site parking

About the Role

As Finance Manager, you’ll lead the day-to-day financial management and strategic improvement of Council’s financial operations. Responsibilities include:

  • Leading and mentoring a small finance team across Cairns and community offices
  • Producing annual budgets and implementing robust budget processes
  • Overseeing end-of-year financial statements and audit preparation
  • Working with internal and external auditors as part of the risk management process
  • Strengthening fraud control measures and financial governance frameworks
  • Developing and embedding structured procurement and costing systems
  • Supporting department heads with budget control and financial performance insights
  • Managing financial system Practical Civica

About You
You are a Finance Manager or Senior Accountant with strong leadership, budgeting, and financial management skills. You are confident working across diverse teams, demonstrate cultural sensitivity, and thrive on building trust and transparency.

You will bring:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline
  • Experience leading financial operations, budgeting, and reporting
  • Understanding of cultural protocols such as sorry business
  • Flexible and resilient mindset – willing to jump in and help out with things like payroll in the event of staff shortages
  • Experience with Practical Civica or similar finance software (beneficial)
  • Commitment to integrity, accountability, and cultural awareness
  • Understanding of Local Government finance (ideally)
