POSITION

Full time position available for a Chef in Cairns, QLD 4870.

SKILLS

The role requires you to hold at least a relevant AQF (or equivalent) diploma and at least one year of relevant work experience. At least three years of relevant work experience may substitute for the formal qualification listed above.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Chef is responsible for overseeing kitchen operations, including food preparation, meal service and quality control, to ensure a consistently high standard dining experience. This role involves preparing dishes to guest specifications while upholding strict food safety, hygiene, presentation and flavour standards. The Chef is also responsible for selecting high-quality ingredients, managing inventory and ordering and overseeing kitchen workflows during service periods. In addition, the Chef leads, trains and supports kitchen staff to promote efficiency, teamwork and consistent performance. The role involves staying current with culinary trends, contributing to menu development and seasonal specials, creating innovative and appealing dishes that enhance guest satisfaction and encourage repeat business.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Knows proper handling of food, equipment and utensils.
  • Supervises and participates in meal service while actively participating in food preparation and delivery.
  • Prepares guests' orders according to individual preferences and specifications.
  • Applies food safety best practices and ensures all kitchen staff follow these standards.
  • Inspects all dishes prior to service to ensure quality and presentation standards are met.
  • Acts with appropriate caution in a dangerous environment where there are knives and high temperature surfaces.
  • Selects high-quality ingredients to achieve optimal flavour and presentation.
  • Plans menus and experiments to develop new specialties that attract diners.
  • Leads the kitchen by coaching other team members for optimal performance.
  • Trains and supports kitchen staff to ensure consistent standards and efficiency.
  • Calculates food requirements and manages inventory to maintain adequate stock levels.
  • Keeps up with trends in cooking and the restaurant business to ensure guests have a positive experience.
  • Works quickly and accurately during busy periods, such as weekends and evenings.
  • Takes direction and collaborates with management.
  • Sets up, cleans and organises workstations.
  • Prepares ingredients for the shift, such as washing vegetables, chopping, and seasoning meat.
  • Portions appropriately and presents meals to reflect a high-quality dining experience by adding garnishes, condiments and sauces.
  • Prepares ovens, utensils and grills for shifts.
  • Takes orders from wait staff or computerised systems.
  • Prepares all dishes in compliance with food health and safety regulations.
  • Recommends ideas for specials or seasonal dishes.
  • Manages multiple food orders simultaneously while maintaining quality and timeliness.

SALARY

$75,000 - $85,000 per annum based on experience.
