Planning Officer – Far North QLD (Temporary)
The Opportunity
A Local Government Authority is seeking an experienced Planning Officer to join its Environment and Planning team on a temporary basis. This role supports the assessment and processing of development applications and provides regulatory planning services that ensure compliance with statutory requirements and planning approvals.
Working as part of a collaborative planning team, you will assess development applications under limited supervision, liaise with applicants and stakeholders, and contribute to sound planning outcomes that align with legislative requirements and community expectations. About the Role
Key responsibilities include:
• Assessing and processing development applications in accordance with legislative and planning scheme requirements
• Providing accurate and professional planning advice to internal and external stakeholders
• Preparing assessment reports, correspondence, and conditions for development approvals
• Updating development assessment tracking systems and developer contributions databases
• Liaising with developers, consultants, property owners, and the community to support compliant development outcomes
• Investigating and assisting with enforcement matters relating to planning and building compliance
• Implementing the provisions of the Planning Scheme, State Planning Policy, and relevant legislation
• Supporting the Team Leader Planning and contributing to team objectives
• Maintaining accurate records in line with recordkeeping and corporate governance requirements
• Delivering high-quality customer service through phone, counter, and written enquiries
About You
You are a capable and customer-focused planning professional with a sound understanding of development assessment processes and legislative frameworks.
You will bring:
• Graduate or postgraduate qualifications in Town Planning (or equivalent)
• Demonstrated experience working as a Planning Officer or in a similar role
• Working knowledge of the Planning Act 2016, Planning Regulation 2017, Building Act, and Queensland Development Code
• Strong investigation, research, and evidence-gathering skills
• Proven ability to prepare clear, well-structured reports and correspondence
• Strong written and verbal communication and stakeholder engagement skills
• Sound decision-making, problem-solving, and time management abilities
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team
• Strong customer service focus and professional approach
• Current C Class Driver’s Licence and White Card (or ability to obtain)
Desirable qualifications and experience include local government planning qualifications, statutory compliance training, experience interpreting plans and maps, and exposure to planning schemes and local laws.
