Senior Strategic Planner – Far North QLD (Temporary)
The Opportunity
A Local Government Authority is seeking an experienced Senior Strategic Planner to join their Environment and Planning team on a temporary basis. This role plays a key part in managing statutory planning instruments and leading strategic land use planning projects that support sustainable development and long-term growth objectives.
Working closely with internal teams, government agencies, and external stakeholders, you will provide expert planning advice, contribute to policy development, and support infrastructure and growth planning initiatives. About the Role
Key responsibilities include:
• Managing and maintaining the Planning Scheme and statutory land use planning documents
• Leading strategic land use planning projects, including growth area planning and master planning
• Providing expert planning advice to guide sustainable development outcomes
• Contributing to the development and implementation of strategic planning initiatives and policies
• Supporting planning for growth areas, population modelling, infrastructure planning, and environmental and heritage planning
• Partnering with internal and external stakeholders to deliver key planning initiatives
• Negotiating and coordinating planning matters with State Government agencies, consultants, and the community
• Representing the organisation at meetings with stakeholders and the public
• Monitoring project progress, identifying risks, and reporting on outcomes against strategic objectives
• Contributing to continuous improvement and collaborative team outcomes
About You
You are a highly experienced strategic planner with strong technical knowledge and the ability to think critically, analyse complex information, and provide clear, practical recommendations.
You will bring:
• Graduate or postgraduate qualifications in Town Planning (or equivalent)
• Significant experience in strategic land use planning, master planning, or assessment of complex development applications
• Strong knowledge of land use planning legislation, policy development, and statutory planning frameworks
• Proven ability to prepare high-quality reports, business cases, and recommendations
• Strong negotiation, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
• Well-developed communication and stakeholder engagement skills
• Ability to manage competing priorities and meet legislative timeframes
• Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and corporate systems
• Current C Class Driver’s Licence
Experience developing Local Government Infrastructure Plans (LGIPs) or negotiating infrastructure agreements will be highly regarded.
