Role Overview

The Financial Accountant plays a key role in supporting this Local Government organisation financial operations by delivering high-quality accounting, reporting and compliance services. Reporting to the Financial Management Coordinator, this position contributes to the effective delivery of financial services across Council while ensuring compliance with legislative and accounting standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation including the Local Government Act, Australian Accounting Standards, and taxation requirements
  • Manage and maintain accurate fixed asset accounting processes and asset registers
  • Provide expert financial and asset management accounting advice to internal stakeholders
  • Assist in maintaining Council’s financial systems including general ledger, budget parameters, and asset databases
  • Prepare timely and accurate financial and management reports to support decision-making
  • Contribute to the preparation of annual budgets, revised budgets, and financial statements
  • Support end-of-month and end-of-year processes, including reconciliations and reporting
  • Assist with audit processes and statutory reporting requirements
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of financial policies, procedures, and systems
  • Support financial projects and initiatives in collaboration with the Financial Management Coordinator

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree or associate degree in Accounting, Business, Management or relevant industry experience
  • Demonstrated experience in asset accounting, financial reporting and budgeting
  • Strong knowledge of accounting standards, legislation, and financial compliance requirements
  • Experience working with financial systems (Technology One experience highly regarded)
  • Intermediate to advanced Excel skills
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and reporting capabilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to build relationships and work collaboratively across departments
