POSITION
We have a full-time position available for a Deck Hand in Cairns, QLD 4870.
SKILLS
The role requires you to hold at least a relevant AQF Cert II and at least one year of relevant work experience OR at least two years of relevant employment experience.
RESPONSIBILITIES
As the Deck Hand on our tours on the Great Barrier Reef, you will play a key role in ensuring the safe, smooth and enjoyable operation of daily tours, supporting both boat operations and guest experiences. Your role will include managing docking operations by handling lines, ropes, and mooring systems to ensure safe arrivals and departures. You will maintain lookout duties at sea, assisting with navigation and course adjustments as directed. The role includes loading, unloading, and securing supplies and passenger items, along with carrying out routine safety checks to protect passengers, crew, and equipment. You will also undertake regular maintenance of deck areas and safety equipment, and assist with setting up, deploying, and retrieving marine activity gear in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.
TASKS
- Manage docking operations by working with lines, ropes, and cables, and supporting the use of mooring systems to ensure safe arrivals and departures.
- Keep watch while at sea, staying alert to surroundings and assisting with navigation and course corrections when required.
- Support the handling of supplies and passenger items, helping to load, unload, and secure everything safely for transit.
- Carry out routine checks around the vessel to maintain a safe environment for passengers, crew, and equipment.
- Undertake regular upkeep of deck areas and equipment, including inspections, cleaning, and maintenance of rigging, safety, and emergency gear.
- Set up and manage equipment used for marine activities, ensuring all lines and gear are properly secured and ready for operation.
- Help with launching and recovering equipment from the water, following safe practices and protecting the marine environment.
- Prepare and organise lines and related gear to ensure smooth and efficient operation during onboard activities.
- Assist with retrieving equipment and managing any interactions with marine life in line with safety and environmental procedures.
- Maintain cleanliness and organisation of equipment and materials, ensuring they are properly stored and kept in good condition.

SALARY
The salary offered will be $65,000 – $75,000 per annum negotiated based on your experience.
