Workshop Manager – Remote Queensland Local Government


The Opportunity

A Remote Queensland Local Government is seeking an experienced Workshop Manager to lead the day-to-day operations of its mechanical workshop and fleet management services.

Reporting to the Director Engineering, you will be responsible for overseeing the maintenance and servicing of Council's fleet, heavy plant and equipment while leading a team of mechanics, apprentices and trainees. This is a hands-on leadership role where you'll balance workshop management, budgeting, staff development and customer service to ensure Council's fleet remains safe, reliable and operational.

This opportunity is ideal for an experienced Heavy Vehicle Mechanic or Workshop Supervisor looking to step into a leadership position with genuine autonomy and long-term career opportunities.

About the Role

You will oversee all aspects of Council's mechanical workshop and fleet operations.

Key responsibilities include:

• Managing the day-to-day operations of the mechanical workshop
• Leading, mentoring and developing mechanics, apprentices and trainees
• Managing preventative maintenance programs across Council's fleet, plant and equipment
• Preparing and managing workshop budgets and expenditure
• Planning workshop schedules and allocating resources effectively
• Managing workshop inventory, parts procurement and supplier relationships
• Preparing quotations and overseeing private works undertaken by the workshop
• Ensuring compliance with WHS, environmental and legislative requirements
• Providing technical advice to management and operational teams
• Driving continuous improvement across workshop systems and processes

About You

You are an experienced workshop leader with strong mechanical knowledge and a passion for leading teams and delivering quality outcomes.

You will bring:

• Trade qualification in Automotive Mechanical Technology (Certificate III or higher)
• Extensive experience maintaining heavy vehicles, plant and equipment
• Previous supervisory or workshop management experience
• Strong budgeting, planning and organisational skills
• Excellent leadership and people management capability
• High level communication and stakeholder management skills
• Strong understanding of Workplace Health and Safety requirements
• Sound computer and administrative skills

Highly Regarded:

• HR Driver Licence (or ability to obtain)
• Certificate IV in Training and Assessment
• Diploma in Business Management
• Local Government or remote workshop experience
