The Opportunity

A progressive Aboriginal Shire Council is seeking an enthusiastic Manager Events & Community Services to lead the delivery of community events, recreation programs and essential community services.

Based in Cairns, this unique FIFO opportunity offers an excellent work-life balance. You'll work one week from a dedicated Cairns office before travelling to the community the following week, with all approved travel, accommodation and office facilities provided. This arrangement is expected to continue for approximately six months while additional staff housing is completed.

Reporting to the Executive Manager Community Services, you will lead a diverse portfolio including community events, sport and recreation, aquatic facilities, community radio and the local post office, helping deliver programs that strengthen community participation, wellbeing and social connection.

What’s On Offer

• $90K – $95K base salary + superannuation
• Cairns-based FIFO roster (1 week Cairns / 1 week community)
• Tax-free FIFO travel allowance of approximately $350 per travel week
• All approved travel to and from the community provided
• Accommodation provided whilst working in the community
• Dedicated office facilities in both Cairns and the community
• Subsidised housing available once new staff accommodation is completed (6 months)

About the Role

You will lead the planning, delivery and continuous improvement of community programs and events that enhance the wellbeing of residents.

Key responsibilities include:

• Leading community events, celebrations and annual activity programs
• Managing sport and recreation programs, aquatic facilities and community services
• Developing engaging programs for children, youth and the wider community
• Leading and mentoring a multidisciplinary team
• Managing budgets, operational plans and performance reporting
• Building strong relationships with community members, government agencies and service providers
• Coordinating grants, funding acquittals and program reporting
• Ensuring services comply with legislative, funding and safety requirements
• Driving continuous improvement across community programs and facilities

About You

You are an energetic and community-focused leader who enjoys developing programs, leading teams and creating positive outcomes for people of all ages.

You will bring:

• Qualifications in Sport & Recreation, Community Services or a related discipline
• Demonstrated experience managing community programs, events or recreation services
• Strong leadership and people management capability
• Excellent organisational and project coordination skills
• Experience managing budgets, grants and reporting requirements
• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
• Current C Class Driver Licence, Blue Card and Police Check (or ability to obtain)
