Carpenter Leading Hand – Remote Local Government (Cape York)
The Opportunity
A Local Queensland Government on the Cape is seeking an experienced Carpenter Leading Hand to help coordinate the delivery of building repairs, maintenance and minor construction works across Council facilities, community housing and other essential assets.
Reporting to the Building and Operations Team Leader, this is a hands-on leadership role where you'll spend as much time on the tools as you do supervising work. You'll plan daily activities, mentor apprentices, maintain high trade standards and ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently and on schedule.

About the Role
You'll help lead the day-to-day delivery of Council's building maintenance and carpentry program while remaining actively involved in trade work.
Key responsibilities include:
• Coordinating and undertaking carpentry, repairs and maintenance across Council facilities
• Planning daily work activities in conjunction with the Building and Operations Team Leader
• Providing hands-on supervision, mentoring and training to a Trade Assistant and two Carpenter Apprentices
• Allocating work, monitoring quality and ensuring projects are completed on time
• Conducting building inspections and identifying maintenance priorities
• Preparing work records, job sheets and maintenance documentation
• Managing tools, materials and equipment to support efficient service delivery
• Liaising professionally with contractors, suppliers, tenants and community members
About You
You're a qualified Carpenter who enjoys leading by example and takes pride in delivering quality workmanship while helping others develop their skills.
You will bring:
• Certificate III in Carpentry or an equivalent recognised trade qualification
• Current Construction White Card
• Current Queensland C Class Driver Licence (or equivalent)
• Demonstrated experience in carpentry, building repairs and maintenance
• Experience supervising, mentoring or training apprentices or trade staff
• Strong understanding of workplace health and safety and building compliance requirements
• Ability to organise work, prioritise tasks and work independently when required
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills
Highly regarded:
• Experience working in a remote Aboriginal community
• Local Government, community housing or QBuild maintenance experience
