Finance Manager / Management Accountant – Regional Queensland Council

The Opportunity

A Regional Queensland Council is seeking an experienced Finance Manager / Management Accountant to take a key leadership role within its Corporate Services team.

Following a recent organisational restructure, this position provides an opportunity to take ownership of Council's day-to-day finance function while strengthening reporting, budgeting, compliance and financial processes. You will manage a broad portfolio encompassing payroll, accounts payable and receivable, asset accounting, taxation, statutory reporting and year-end requirements.

Importantly, the role offers flexibility for the successful candidate to spend three weeks working in community followed by one week working from home in Cairns, providing a valuable balance between an influential regional leadership role and regular time in Cairns.

About the Role

Reporting to the Director Corporate Services, you will provide high-level financial leadership and ensure Council's finance function operates effectively, accurately and within its statutory obligations.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the day-to-day finance function, including payroll, accounts payable and accounts receivable
  • Managing and supporting the Finance team
  • Coordinating annual budget preparation and monthly budget versus actual reporting
  • Preparing monthly management reports and financial statements
  • Managing month-end and year-end processes, reconciliations and journals
  • Overseeing asset accounting, including the fixed asset register and asset revaluations
  • Preparing BAS, FBT and other taxation requirements
  • Coordinating annual financial statements and statutory reporting
  • Working closely with external auditors to support successful audit outcomes
  • Liaising with funding agencies, banks, contractors, insurers and other external stakeholders
  • Improving financial controls, systems and processes across the organisation
  • Providing financial advice and support to senior management

About You

You are an experienced finance professional who combines strong technical accounting capability with the confidence to lead people and work closely with senior stakeholders.

You will bring:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Accounting, Business, Finance or a related discipline
  • Strong financial and management accounting experience
  • Previous experience managing or supervising a finance team
  • Sound knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards
  • Experience with budgeting, financial reporting, reconciliations and statutory accounts
  • Strong Excel and financial systems capability
  • Excellent communication, organisation and time management skills
  • Ability to work autonomously and exercise sound judgement
  • Willingness and ability to work effectively within a culturally diverse regional community

CPA or CA qualifications, Local Government experience, experience dealing with government agencies and MYOB knowledge will be highly regarded.
