POSITION

We have a full-time position for a Laboratory Technician in Mission Beach Qld 4852

SKILLS

The position requires a Diploma or higher qualification in Agricultural Science, Plant Science, Biotechnology, Laboratory Technology or a related discipline, together with at least 1 year of relevant experience in agricultural science.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Working under the direction of the Laboratory Manager, the Agricultural Laboratory Technician will provide hands-on technical support across the laboratory. The role will carry out specialised laboratory procedures used to propagate banana plants, monitor the performance and quality of cultures, maintain technical production data, assist with controlled trials and investigate laboratory issues affecting culture growth or contamination. The position directly supports the laboratory's production of healthy, uniform and disease-free banana tissue culture plants for supply to commercial banana growers.

POSITION DUTIES

The position will require you to undertake the following duties;

• Perform laboratory procedures involved in banana tissue culture, including explant preparation, sterilisation, media preparation, multiplication, rooting and acclimatisation.
• Prepare culture media, nutrient solutions and plant growth regulator treatments in accordance with laboratory procedures.
• Monitor tissue cultures for contamination, abnormal growth, rooting performance, viability and overall plant health.
• Collect, record and analyse laboratory and plant growth data, including multiplication rates, rooting outcomes, survival rates and contamination levels.
• Assist with controlled laboratory trials aimed at improving tissue culture techniques, propagation efficiency and plant quality.
• Investigate contamination, poor growth and other culture issues and report findings to the Laboratory Manager.
• Maintain sterile laboratory conditions and comply with biosecurity, hygiene, chemical handling and workplace health and safety requirements.
• Operate, clean and maintain laboratory equipment including autoclaves, laminar flow cabinets, microscopes and other tissue culture equipment.
• Support the Laboratory Manager with quality control activities to ensure healthy, uniform and disease-free banana plants are produced for commercial growers.

SALARY

The position attracts a salary of $70 000 - $90 000 per annum negotiated based on your experience.
