Animal Control Officer – Remote Cape York

The Opportunity

A Remote Queensland Council is seeking an experienced Animal Control Officer to join its Community Services team and support the delivery of effective animal management services within a remote Cape York community.

This hands-on role combines animal welfare, compliance, community education and practical field work. You will contribute to Council's Animal Management Plan, undertake patrols, respond to animal-related complaints, maintain accurate registration records and help promote responsible animal ownership throughout the community.

This opportunity would suit someone with animal management or regulatory experience who is confident working independently, engaging respectfully with the community and operating in a remote environment.

About the Role

You will support the management, welfare and control of domestic animals while helping Council deliver effective animal management and community education programs.

Key responsibilities include:

• Undertaking community patrols to identify stray, nuisance, unregistered or sick animals
• Capturing and impounding wandering animals in accordance with relevant Local Laws
• Investigating animal-related complaints and taking appropriate action
• Responding to dog attacks and gathering relevant information and evidence
• Maintaining animal registration, impoundment and compliance records
• Caring for impounded animals, including feeding, exercising and basic first aid where required
• Monitoring animal welfare and arranging veterinary assistance when necessary
• Maintaining Council's animal holding facilities and associated equipment
• Supporting animal health, population control and responsible ownership initiatives
• Educating community members about animal management requirements and owner responsibilities
• Contributing to the ongoing development of Council's Animal Management Plan

About You

You are a practical and community-minded Animal Control Officer who can balance animal welfare, regulatory responsibilities and respectful community engagement.

You will bring:

• Certificate IV in Animal Control and Regulation or an equivalent qualification
• Demonstrated experience in animal control, Local Laws, compliance or a similar role
• Sound knowledge of animal behaviour, handling and identification
• Current manual C Class Driver Licence
• Hazardous Chemicals handling certification
• Current Senior First Aid Certificate
• Current firearms licence
• Strong communication, negotiation and conflict management skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a small team
• Sound computer skills, including Microsoft Office
• Ability to communicate respectfully and effectively within an Aboriginal community
• Willingness and capability to work in a remote environment

Experience living or working in a remote community will be highly regarded.
